Legendary Acquires ‘Street Fighter’ Live-Action Film, TV Rights

Is that a “hadouken” we hear? Legendary Entertainment has acquired the live-action film and television rights for the Capcom video game franchise Street Fighter. All future projects, including a feature film already in development, will be co-developed and produced in conjunction with the videogame developer.

Since its launch in 1987, Street Fighter has become one of the most well-known and highest-grossing video game franchises of all time, selling over 49 million units worldwide. The series of games follows many iconic characters, including Ryu, Ken, Chung-Li, Guile and more, each with their own memorable moves, looks, and catchphrases.

Luckily for the upcoming live-action film, Legendary has a successful track record with adaptations, including Dune and Pokemon Detective Pikachu. Hopefully, the developer can defeat the curse of the previous Street Fighter films, 1994’s Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li starring Kristin Kreuk, both critical and box office bombs.

Currently on Legendary’s franchise slate is Dune: Part Two, debuting November 3. On the Street Fighter side, the newest installment Street Fighter 6 is slated for release June 2, 2023, on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, and PC via Steam.
