Israeli Academy Award winning animated film Legend of Destruction first debuted in 2021, and features work from artists David Polonsky and Michael Faust, known for the 2008 Oscar-winning animated film Waltz with Bashir. Now, the film’s director Gidi Dar (Ushpizin) is putting together a voice cast, including Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), Elliott Gould (Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice), and Billy Zane (Titanic), to dub the film for English audiences.
Set in 66 AD Judea, Legend of Destruction tells the story of the Jewish revolt against Rome, which ended with the destruction of the Temple in the year 70. The groundbreaking film features 1,500 original paintings by Polonsky and Faust, which are displayed in a pseudo slideshow “to produce an innovative cinematic language, in creating a full-fledged experience of an epic action war film,” according to Deadline.
“This story is at the core of Jewish existence, it is one of the darkest moments of my people, yet few know it. I felt compelled to tell it,” says Dar.
The film’s events are told from the perspective of Ben Batich, dubbed by Issac, who follows the charismatic rebel leader Bar Giora, voiced by Zane. Queen Berenice, the last Jewish Queen, is played by Lilly.
“It is a story that has great historical sweep, but also is very intimate, it is about a personal relation between the lead character and God” says Isaac.
Legend of Destruction is produced by Amir Harel of Lama Films (Tel Aviv on Fire), LOD productions, Yaki Dunietz, and Dar. Isaac executive produces under his Mad Gene Media banner, alongside Lilly.
