Feral Child directors Nella Addy and Rogan vd Berg follow up last year’s Lush Snow Ferry film with a complimentary piece of fantasy adventure featuring The Lord of Misrule, a creative renegade inspired by David Bowie and Mick Jagger.
Nella Addy and Rogan vd Berg in London: “We were thrilled when Lush reached out to us to create another animation to personify their fan-favorite Lord of Misrule product range, thereby expanding the Lush universe and building upon the Snow Fairy piece.
“At the start of the project we faced the creative challenge of needing to fully ideate and visualize the The Lord of Misrule character, the backstory, as well as expand the world so it could encompass both the Snow Fairy and the Lord of Misrule.
“We collaborated with ECD Carl Addy again this year in the crucial early stages of the story writing process, drawing on his experience to help deepen the character backstory and tie it back to Lush’s core values.
“We pulled inspiration from cultural icons such as David Bowie, Elton John, Mick Jagger, and Harry Styles. Their self-expression transcends gender, they’re playful, cheeky, smart, and cherished for their contribution to culture.
“What we ended up creating together was the story of a rebellious character being an embodiment of misrule that stems from creativity rather than destruction; a Halloween story of mischievous re-wilding that ties into the Lush ethos of ‘leaving the world Lusher than we found it.’
“Once we established where the character comes from, why they’re mischievous, what that misrule looks like, and what its greater purpose in the Lush universe is, the next challenge was storyboarding and crafting a one-minute cel-animated sequence.
“It needed to touch on key elements of the story in a way that leaves space for further expansion into the future, while at the same time giving fans a good feel of who this character is and what their motivations might be.
“During character development, we pulled inspiration from cultural icons such as David Bowie, Elton John, Mick Jagger, and Harry Styles. Their self-expression transcends gender, they’re playful, cheeky, smart, and cherished for their contribution to culture.
“In a similar sense, The Lord of Misrule is uninhibited in their self-expression, in a state of creative flow and using art to improve their world by allowing nature to flourish.”
