Technicolor Creative Studios Building Virtual Production Stage in LA

Technicolor Creative Studios has announced its partnership with virtual production company, NantStudios, to build a new virtual production stage in Los Angeles, set to open in 2023. The new facility is planned as an extension of the Technicolor Creative Hub in Culver City, Los Angeles – a 60,000 sqft creative technology campus based in the heart of LA’s tech region.   The new stage will serve the collective of companies under the Technicolor Creative Studios umbrella (MPC, The Mill, Mikros Animation, and Technicolor Games) as well as their clients looking to research and develop content utilizing virtual production technologies for feature films, episodic, advertising and gaming.

The ability to generate photorealistic 3D environments and visual effects on set, in real-time through virtual production, provides an unparalleled level of creative flexibility. These environments are powered by cinema-grade displays and large clusters of VFX render hardware known as LED volumes, that have caused a seismic shift in media production methodologies.

Clients partnering with Technicolor Creative Studios will have access to NantStudios’ full suite of state-of-the-art virtual production technology in tandem with the award-winning capabilities of Technicolor’s artists globally, from previsualization to virtual scouting and final pixel production.

NantStudios, which is part of the NantWorks ecosystem of companies, offers fully integrated services including digital asset creation, AI machine learning expertise, motion control, performance capture, and on-set operations, in addition to having an award-winning leadership team and a family of issued patents covering cloud hybrid fabric, machine vision, and computing technologies.

Mariana Acuna Acosta, Technicolor Creative Studios’ Senior Vice President of Virtual Production, will helm the virtual production stage. Acuna Acosta works at the cusp of real-time technologies, and has gained extensive experience at Glassbox, Technologies, Epic Games, Jolt VR, and Foundry.

Technicolor Creative Studios has worked on several large-scale virtual production projects to date including Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King, but with this new bespoke space, plans to heavily invest in R&D and content creation involving LED stages and real-time technology.

NantStudios continues to build and operate stages internationally and, in Los Angeles alone, will build five new stages as part of its rapid global expansion. This will include the Technicolor Virtual Production stage in Culver City, CA. NantStudios continues to offer its VP services to all clients and projects globally.
